The Saddest Thing

December 14, 2010 at 1:45 am (Personal)

It’s December. To me, that’s Christmas. Family time. A time for decorating, for baking, for trying to get the cat to bat the bell around while also trying to keep it out of the tree.

I love family at Christmas. Heck, I generally like family any time.

But there’s something seriously wrong with families.

What happened to dinner? I see people piling int restaurants – sure that makes some sense, sometimes, that’s easier. (but not every night! Sheesh!) But in restaurants… they want to sit to see the TV.

But even worse is what I’ve been seeing, and saw a HORRIBLE case of the other weekend…

We were at Chili’s, my sister, grandmother, mom, and I, and we pulled out a cell phone a total of I think once.

A family was seated next to us. They came in, the three of them, mother, father, and daughter, each staring at their cell phone. They never talked to each other. They never even looked UP at each other.

They ordered. No “please”. No “thank you”. No eye contact, just mindless droning. The kid was sprawled all over the place, (And I mean like maybe 8, tops.) going “bloop bloop” and making annoying (to others) noises. Her parents didn’t bat an eye. She slurped and sucked on her beverage in such a way to make that god-awful sucking sound, the one that’s annoying and gross all at once.

Neither parent said anything. Mom and Dad (both overweight) were on their smart phones. Dad was reading, Mom playing solitaire.

Food arrived, the mom just nudged it out of the way and kept playing. They didn’t put their phones away to eat.

This family was barely there. They made my heart ache. How can you live like that?

There’s this person you married for love (I saw rings), but you’re not even looking at them. They’re just the person who happens to be sitting next to you.

There’s a child you brought into the world, and instead of teaching her, spending time with her, showing her love, you’re ignoring her.

That was so indescribably sad to me.

Happiness

Huzzah! My copy of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has shipped! lol

~*~*~*~

Well, what I really wanted to write about is the New Year/the Current Year. I know that when the New Year hits, I will probably forget to write a journal for it. Makes sense, then, for me to do so now! :)

Unfortunately, what I see with New Year’s entries revolve mainly around “goals for the next year”…along with notations of what didn’t happen.

I’m going to shake it up, and challenge you, and myself, to instead write what we’re PROUD of for this past year. What have we accomplished? There’s always something! :)

Here, I’ll start.

In the past year, I’ve worked hard, and gotten myself to a good place, mentally.

I have lost over a pant size in weight… I used to wear a 30-32 (I kept trying to tell myself I still wore a 28, but it was tight and I was always afraid of it showing off my stomach and lower back.). Now, I am happy to say that I wear a 26 in pants, and almost a 24 in shirts! (My waist is the 26, but the legs and rear are too lose! I am so thrilled)

And I am still losing weight.

I can fly without needing a seatbelt extender.

I can walk around at Disneyland all day. Same with the Dickens Fair, but come on… Disneyland is WAY more fun! lol

I can use a regular bathroom stall. (hey, I’m really happy about this lol)

I have reread three of my favorite book series.

I’ve worked hard to improve my leatherworking, and done what I think are some pretty nice commissions! :)

I gave up soda – I decided it wasn’t doing anything for me anymore, and just quit cold turkey (I was drinking 2-3 large bottles a day, sometimes a 2liter a day of mountain dew.). I will occassionaly have a soda – but I always ask myself “Am I drinking it because I want it? Or think I need it?”. (I’ll drink a dew on an 8-hour car trip…The other day I had a small soft drink at a fast food place but didn’t finish it!) I’m really happy that I kicked the habit. I am so much happier drinking water. I feel more energetic.

I’ve improved my cooking!! I can make a thicker sauce, and I’ve finally perfected chicken soup and my spaghetti sauce. :)

I am so much happier this year than I have been in a while. (hey that’s a big step for me lol)

So there you have it. What I am proud of. ^__^.

My goals for next year are to keep losing weight and keep up with my cooking and leatherwork. ^_^.

How about you guys?

Huzzah and Jubilation!!

September 28, 2010 at 1:19 am (Personal)

I’ve been working on weight loss since December.

I am pleased to say that ALL of my jeans are baggy (even my tight ones) and prone to falling down.

Also, when I flew last month, I needed a seatbelt extender by about 4 inches or so. I flew this weekend and not only do I no longer need one,  I had to tighten it! 😀

I am so very happy and excited about this!! ♥

Grocery Store Pet Peeve(s)

July 26, 2010 at 2:29 am (Personal)

Now, I don’t mind grocery shopping. Sometimes I even enjoy it!

I love preparing a meal, and I love seeing people enjoy it when it’s done. I like knowing I’ve done something well.

But still, certain things bother me.

Alot.

Two things that should never be packaged with each other, or with other items – cleaning products,…and raw meat. And I should never HAVE to ask. It should be trained “don’t do that!!”.

I can stand that lovely loaf of bread I got from the bakery being crushed under a can – joke’s on you, it’ s a french bread. Has a firm crust, ya wingnut. It’ll be fine – because I’m going to fix that as soon as I open the trunk to put the bags in.

So keep the dish soap and bleach away from the bananas and pasta and cheese, please. It bothers me.

But, honestly, not as much as raw meat near those items.

Cleaning supplies, okay, I can wash off the bananas, and hope the packaging of the cheese will protect it – usually not, in my head, but.. okay.

But think on this – that raw meat, that glistening chicken breast, that marbled ground beef, that luscious steak, that sweet-looking pork roast… they are all handled in the back room. Where the nice people wear gloves and handle your dead animal.

So then they package that raw meat – still wearing their meaty gloves. Touching the plastic wrap. The tray. All with the same gloves.

So do you think that that package is sanitary? Do, you, really? No, no it’s not. So then it sits on the shelf. With other meat products. That have, again, been wrapped by those same meaty fingers. And have been sitting there maybe longer.

So I pick up my meat last. It goes on the bottom of the cart – and I do mean the bottom. If I’m  thinking, when I grab my produce, I get some extra plastic bags, then, inside out, I grab the meat with the inside of the bag, then pull it right-sided to be even cleaner.

And yet… when I go through the checkout, I have to ASK them to please bag the meat seperately.

Seriously? And then they look at me like I am stupid.

*sighs*

Fixing + Good News! :-D

July 26, 2010 at 2:21 am (Personal)

Okay. I went through and fixed stuff… all of those “uncategorized” posts are now either cooking… or personal.

In some cases, both lol.

In good news, my mom’s mixer died.

Well, not good that it’s dead…but man that thing was getting up there. I remember when mom wanted one… so Allie saved up her money (just a widdle tid back then!!), got herself a coupon…and gave Mom a Sunbeam mixer.

But it died….rest in peace.

The GOOD part is that…. WE GOT TO REPLACE IT!!!!!! *bounces with glee*

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=102986&COL=1717&RN=437&

It’s a gorgeous, Empire Red 5 quart KitchenAid stand mixer. It’s gorgeous. The head tilts back and forth, you can adjust how far down the mixer bit goes, and comes with the dough hook, the beater, and the whisk….

I’ve been lusting after a KitchenAid mixer for a while now. I am THRILLED!!!!

I cannot wait to break it in tomorrow with a Devil’s Food Cake with chocolate frosting.

SO BLOODY HAPPY!!!!!! 😀

Swimming! :)

July 16, 2010 at 3:38 pm (Personal)

So, today, I sucked it up and said “…. I am going to the pool!”

Swallowed the shyness, pushed away the nerves, and grabbed my swim suit ..

well… it’s really 2 pieces… a boy-short-ish bottom and a long top. So maybe it’s a tankini? The pieces aren’t a set, but they are both black.. the top has a plunge neckline with the straps held on by one gold ring per side.. so I got the bottoms that had gold and copper-toned (so sunblock pun intended) rivets on it.

So, in good news… I learned a few things… one, sunglasses would be good. I forgot them. Derp. Two, tie my hair back, like in a braid :), Maybe I should invest in a pair of cheap sunglasses I can swim with them on? Eh nah that’d be silly.

And third… Apparently, the thing to do is bring a book to the pool. Sorry, what? This totally goes against my “ways to do things”. Ah well. I may sacrifice one of my beaten-to-hell books that I used to keep on the bathroom window ledge…sorry, off topic.

I learned, walking up to the pool, that I don’t do well with flip flops. After my trip, I may just use my strappy sandals. They stay on my feet and don’t slip around as much… even tho I DO like my sparkly gold flip flips that match my gold accents and my goldenrod-colored pool towel. (That this is uber absorbent. Lovin’ it!)

As I came in sight of the pool, I saw they had a spa. How lovely, a hot tub! ❤

I picked myself out a nice sunny lounge chair, pushed away my dignity, shucked off my jeans, sandals, sweater, and glasses, and headed for the pool stairs.

The water was nice. Not warm, not cold, not freezing… but pleasant and cool. Not bad, since it was 61 degrees and windy!

I felt perfectly comfortable, sliding all the way into the water. It felt sooooo good.

As I started to swim, all I could think was “I earned this”. And I did.

It was wonderful! ^__^. I swam for half an hour, sat in the spa for 20 minutes, then spent the last 10 minutes drying in the sun.

Can’t wait for next week 😛

Wow, Been A While…

May 13, 2010 at 8:59 pm (Personal)

So yeah. I haven’t posted in a while, I’m sorry!!

Most of my cooking lately has been “quick’n’easy” stuff, like chicken salad, or spaghetti, or tuna noodle casserole. Nothing really creative lately.

Tho I did learn something today… even frozen groundbeef should not be microwaved for 5 minutes. It turns it brown and kinda hard, it loses flavor. 😦

So yeah. There ya go, just a bit of an update. ^_^.

So. Kitchen-y-Goodness.

February 5, 2010 at 1:47 am (cooking, Personal)

Going through my mom’s kitchen and familarizing myself with what she does (and doesn’t) have, I’ve been working up quite the list of “things every kitchen/pantry should have”.

Why am I sharing it here? Because I can.
Kitchen – keep in mind… cooking is an art. Baking is a science. A plate is your canvas, pots, pans, knives, your paintbrushes.
*At least 1 very good sharp knife. Normally, I work with about 3 different ones (sizes/tips). No, I don’t know what they’re called.
*Decent pots and pans.  Small pot, big pot, big thingy for making sauce in… pans for grilled-cheese size…and maybe a slightly bigger one for side items.
*Baking dishes!!! 😀 Seriously, at least 3 cassrole-type dishes.
*Obviously, cookie sheets, cake pans, cupcake pans.
*Cutting boards. 1 wood, 1 plastic. Use the plastic for meat and other things with nasty microorganisms.
*Mixing spoons, wood and plastic is my preference.
*Spatulas. Heat-resistant is good.
*GOOD tongs. Yanno, not the kit ones. Decent ones that pick stuff up
*Mixing bowls!
*Measuring cups and spoons.
*Uh…stuff. Common sense, folks.

Pantry:
*Cooking Oil
*Olive Oil. Extra Virgin doesn’t really matter..but quality will affect taste so… yeah. Buy the good stuff.
*Flour
*Sugar – regular, at least. Brown and powdered are a bonus!!
*Salt! Regular old salt, kosher salt, sea salt.. pick your poison. We’ve got sea salt in a grinder. I like kosher salt too, tho.
*Pepper. Freshly ground has WAAAAAY better flavor.
*Pasta. Keep a variety on hand. 🙂
*Soy sauce.
*Worcestershire sauce.
*Bisquick.
*Jiffy Mix
*Honey!
*Maple syrup. Why not?
*Canned protein. I like keeping chicken and tuna in water.
*Canned Veggies – corn, green beans, and peas seem to keep the best. Carrots get waaaaaay too mushy.
*Diced Tomatoes, Tomato Sauce, Tomato Paste. See? Worst case, you can make spaghetti!
*Canned soups keep well! Cream of Mushroom works well for chicken or pork, or tuna noodle casserole. Chicken noodle is handy to have on hand for in case you’re sick (but I find wonton soup to be the best!)
*I usually try to keep a few cans of chili and some cornbread mix around, too.
*For spices,…well, it varies on your own tastes. Me, I keep around:
~~~Oregano*
~~~Sage*
~~~Garlic&Herb Mrs. Dash*
~~~Minced Onion
~~~Garlic Powder*
~~~Garlic Salt*
~~~Dill
~~~Ground Cloves
~~~Ground Ginger*
~~~Allspice
~~~Lemon Pepper*
~~~Paprika
~~~Rosemary
~~~Thyme

There’s more… keep in mind, you never want to run out. What happens if you get sick? Or terrible weather keeps you from getting to the store? Or you’re just too darn tired from work to shop? So when you’re down to about 2-3 meals, shop for new supplies. 🙂 Just make sure you use the older stuff first! ^,^.

I’m tired. That’s all for now. 🙂
